Justin Townes Earle was just interviewed for the magazine "Acoustic Guitar", which I've never read but I'm guessing has something to do with the electric harp. He is going to be on the cover as well, which is good, because he rules. Lately all I've been listening to is "Harlem River Blues", although his newest album "Nothing's Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now" is great as well. Not only is this dude like seven feet tall, he is also skinny as fuck, and since I am skinny as fuck myself, I feel the connection that I never had with John Popper...
In addition to being a talented musician, that has a very cool style of guitar playing, he is also known for being a maniac and getting arrested a couple years ago at his show in Indianapolis. Here was an account from a fan at that show that would make Beavis and Butthead lose their shit:
“What I saw in Indianapolis the other night…flask on stage, bitching
about the crowd, asking for drugs at a record shop, smashing up the
club, starting fights, and getting arrested, looks like someone has
relapsed and needs to check himself back in again!”
Well, other than the fact that they also say he punched the merch girl in the face, which I don't think happened exactly (...it's more likely that she tripped and fell into his hand), this sounds like it could've been "The Hangover" part III! I would like to think that had I been at the show, I would have smashed something too, hi-fived him, and said "let's get the fuck outta here Justin, this place doesn't understand us." ..But in reality, the only thing I would've smashed is my piece of shit "smart" phone when the video recorder wouldn't work. (by the way you can see his response to that accusation here)
But to get back on topic, JTE was just interviewed here, and it's a good read if you're a fan. The best part is when he mentions that he played in punk bands when he first started out and listened to Nirvana. He only decided to pick up acoustic guitar once he was exposed to Leadbelly, which I'm guessing was a direct result of Nirvana covering "Where Did you Sleep Last Night?". Basically, another thing we can thank Nirvana for, once again summing up why they are the greatest band ever.
