Time to ruin your weekend, sorry...

Daily Weirdo counts down it's 10 most depressing songs of all time...

So maybe none of your friends liked that new facebook picture of you holding the big fish you caught on your trip to Maine?  Or, the person you just went on a really nice date with the other night, tells you they are "actually really busy the next few weeks" but "will let you know when they're free again".  Whatever the case is,  if you ever feel the need to put on some really depressing music, grab a glass of wine and just wallow,  I'm going to help you out.

I've seen lots of these lists on other blogs, but never one that I fully agree with.  It's quite a hard task, but I think I've done a pretty good job.  If you  aren't drowning in a puddle of tears by the end,  I'll be damned. Enjoy, you miserable bastards...

If you weirdo's have any suggestions, or disagree with any, feel free to voice that in the comments sections.

#10. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds with the song "Idiot Prayer" off The Boatman's Call.  From what I gather, this song is about a man who is about to be executed for killing his lover.  The genius of Nick Cave's lyrics is that it can probably be interpreted in many other ways too... Anyhow, it's depressing.

#9. "September" from the album "Jacksonville City Nights" by Ryan Adams.  Tear jerker about a girl just given the news that she has a terminal illness and won't live to see winter.

#8.  "Anyone and Everyone" from Lhasa De Sela's final album in 2009, "Sela". Shortly after the album was recorded, Lhasa was diagnosed with breast cancer and sadly passed away the next year at only 37.  This song was written from the view point from someone near death, and was very prophetic in that way.

#7. "Hallelujah" - Jeff Buckley, from the album "Grace".  Jeff Buckley's take on Leonard Cohen's brilliant anthem of lost love.  After Buckley's untimely death in 1997 (drowned in the Wolf Harbor River, Memphis Tennessee), this song became all the more sorrowful to listen to.

#6. "Something In The Way" - Nirvana from the album "Nevermind".  A very stark song about Kurt Cobain's time spent under a bridge, after a time of being sent back and forth to live with different family members after his parents divorce.  Kurt simply felt he was just "something in the way".  His suicide in 1994, only added to the depressing nature of this song.

#5. Elliot Smith- "Needle in the Hay" from the album "Elliot Smith".  This song makes me feel like pure shit.  Maybe it's because I always picture the scene from Royal Tenenbaum's where Luke Wilson attempts to kill himself, or it could be knowing that Elliot Smith stabbed himself in the heart.

#4. Johnny Cash - "Hurt" from the album "American IV When The Man Comes Around".  This take on the popular Nine Inch Nails song proves even stronger than the original, with a video of Johnny Cash reflecting on his life in his old age.  This was the last "hit single" from Cash before his death in 2003.

#3. Vic Chesnutt - "I Flirted With You All My Life" from the album "At the Cut".  This song came about after a few failed suicide attempts in which Vic declares "clearly I was not ready".  The story of Vic Chesnutt is a sad one.  After a car accident at the age of 18 he was left a quadriplegic from the neck down, forever confined to a wheelchair.  He did however discover he could still play guitar, but was limited to just simple chords.  On Christmas of 2009, he did finally take his life at the age of 45,  overdosing on muscle relaxants. RIP Vic!

#2. Leonard Cohen - "Show Me The Place" off his most recent album "Old Idea's".  In this latest effort, Leonard at the age of 77 is realizing his mortality and addressing it in many of the songs.  His voice sounds deeper and more depressing than ever.  I'm convinced this song could even make Whitey Bulger lose his composure.  It's as beautiful as it is depressing.

#1. Alice In Chains - "Down In A Hole" from the album "Dirt".   This song sums up depression at it's peak.  "Down in a hole and I don't know if I can be saved".  As we all know, eventually Layne was found dead in his apartment April of 2002 of a drug overdose.
